Every exceptional piece of jewellery begins with an exceptional gemstone. But selecting the right one is about far more than choosing a beautiful colour. It is a careful process of evaluating character, durability, brilliance, and how each stone will become an integral part of the design.

Choosing the Right Gemstone

Choosing a gemstone is about far more than colour.

It is a balance of beauty, durability, rarity, and the role the stone is destined to play. A gemstone that will be worn every day calls for different considerations than one created as a collector's piece. Some are chosen for their exceptional colour, others for their scarcity, while many carry a deeply personal significance — marking a birth, a memory, or a defining moment.

People often ask what makes a gemstone "good" or even "the best." The truth is, there is no universal answer. Unlike diamonds, which are commonly evaluated using the 4Cs, coloured gemstones cannot be fully defined by a grading system. Their beauty lies in qualities that are difficult to quantify — the richness of their colour, the way they interact with light, and the individuality that makes each one unlike any other.

When selecting a gemstone, several characteristics are carefully considered. Colour is often the most important, including its hue, tone and saturation, but it is never judged in isolation. Cut determines how the gemstone returns light and reveals its brilliance, while clarity contributes to its overall character. Durability, crystal quality, and how the gemstone complements the proportions of the design are equally important.

One of the most fascinating aspects of coloured gemstones is that even stones of the same variety can look remarkably different. Two sapphires or spinels may share the same origin and weight, yet display entirely different personalities. In fact, the most meaningful comparisons can only be made by viewing gemstones side by side. Our perception of colour is surprisingly unreliable, making direct comparison the best way to appreciate the subtle differences in hue, saturation, brilliance, and character.

No remarkable gemstone should overpower the design, nor should the design exist merely to display the stone. The two should feel inseparable, each elevating the other to create something harmonious and enduring.

In bespoke jewellery, gemstone selection is never an afterthought. It is one of the most important decisions in the creative process, shaping not only how a piece looks, but how it will be worn, treasured, and remembered for generations.
